a person wearing judo uniform with black belt

The right uniform? Is there such a thing? Yes and no. Martial arts uniforms are standardized, mostly, in any one dojo, training facility, or martial art. There is an array of colors, fabrics, artwork, and other variables that can be used to fabricate a uniform depending on its use or cultural history. Uniforms are integral to our training experience.

Thickness (Judo or Karate)

Any art that incorporates grappling or throwing such as Judo, BJJ, Japanese Jujutsu, Aikido, and Sambo, should absolutely have a gi thick enough to withstand constant gripping. Thinner uniforms will surely rip and or lose integrity as they age with consistent tugging and twisting.

Practically, the thicker gi types will also allow you to simulate self-defense from grabs differently than a thinner gi would. Thinner uniforms are more related to t-shirts or light tops. They have a lot of give to them and if someone were to grab it, it would surely tear away or at least allow you to maintain control, somewhat. Thicker gi will simulate what happens when someone grabs your winter or leather jacket and begins to whip you around. Conversely, you can also learn to manage attackers who are wearing thinner or thicker material as this can vastly change the way you approach techniques and control.

Lighter weight uniforms are perfectly fine for any art that requires little or no grappling such as Karate, Tae Kwon Do, or Kung-Fu.

Colors, Patches, Cleanliness, Care, etc…

Colors and designs do not contribute to training. But uniformity in the dojo can contribute. There is a reason military personal conform to dress code and etiquette. They are to keep their uniform clean and tidy. It also signifies who is who in the ranks. And it bestows upon the wearer a responsibility and expectation. Whatever the expectation of your dojo, uphold it.

A clean, well cared for uniform is vital to practice. Mainly, if it was drenched in sweat last week and was never washed, you will have no training partner. Solo kata it is for you. If it is ripped or torn, repair or replace it as it may very well become permanently damaged during class.

It is important to have multiple uniform sets so you never miss a class because it was “dirty”. Take care of you training gear so you never have to miss a class again!

Reviews

We can’t always be buying training uniforms such as Judo gi’s or Jujutsu gi’s that end up being too small, not true to size, or lighter than expected. We will be reviewing products from www.elitesports.com for everyone to benefit from. They are

Elite Sports Mens BJJ Gi

Elite Sports Black BJJ Gi

Elite Sports Women’s BJJ Gi

These gi’s are nicely woven, durable, and overall made well. The sizing chart seems to be a true fit, although if you are on the cusp of two different sizes, choose the one bigger for more comfort / room to grow. If you desire a more snug or fitting uniform, choose one size lower. Overall satisfied with this gi.
